Smoked Salmon: The star ingredient of the Philadelphia Roll, providing a rich, smoky flavor that pairs beautifully with the cream cheese and vegetables.
Cream Cheese: The creamy texture of the cheese complements the freshness of the salmon, creating a balanced and indulgent sushi roll.
Sushi Rice: Sushi rice is sticky and seasoned with rice vinegar, which gives the rolls their signature taste and helps the ingredients stick together.
Nori: The seaweed wrap is an essential component of sushi rolls, offering a subtle salty flavor that pairs well with the fresh ingredients.
Avocado: Adds a buttery texture and mild flavor, balancing the richness of the cream cheese and smoked salmon.
Instructions
Prepare the Sushi Rice
Rinse the Rice: Rinse the sushi rice thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and ensures the rice has the right texture.
Cook the Rice: Combine the rinsed rice and 2 ½ cups of water in a rice cooker or a pot. Cook according to your rice cooker’s instructions, or bring it to a boil on the stove and simmer for 15-20 minutes. Let it sit covered for 10 minutes after cooking.
Season the Rice: While the rice is still warm, mix the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small bowl. Stir the mixture into the rice until it’s well combined. Let the rice cool to room temperature.
Prepare the Fillings
Slice the Salmon: Slice the smoked salmon into thin strips. If you’re using fresh salmon, make sure it’s halal-certified and sushi-grade.
Prepare the Vegetables: Slice the avocado into thin strips and julienne the cucumber into long, thin pieces.
Cream Cheese Preparation: Soften the cream cheese by letting it sit at room temperature for a few minutes, making it easier to spread.
Assemble the Rolls
Prepare Your Rolling Station: Place a bamboo sushi mat on a clean surface and cover it with a sheet of plastic wrap to prevent the rice from sticking. Lay a sheet of nori, shiny side down, on the sushi mat.
Spread the Rice: Using your fingers or a rice paddle, spread an even layer of the cooled sushi rice over the nori, leaving about an inch at the top of the nori sheet. Be gentle to avoid crushing the rice.
Add Fillings: Lay a strip of smoked salmon, a few slices of avocado, and some julienned cucumber along the center of the rice. Add a small dollop of cream cheese over the fillings for extra creaminess.
Roll the Sushi: Carefully lift the bamboo mat from the edge closest to you, and begin rolling the sushi tightly, applying gentle pressure as you go. Continue rolling until you reach the uncovered edge of the nori. Seal the edge with a little water.
Cut the Rolls: Using a sharp knife, slice the rolled sushi into 6-8 pieces. Clean the knife between cuts to ensure smooth, clean slices.
Serve the Philadelphia Rolls
Plate and Serve: Arrange the slices of Philadelphia Roll on a plate. Garnish with sesame seeds, pickled ginger, and wasabi on the side. Serve with soy sauce for dipping.
