Melon Prosciutto Skewers

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium-sized melon (cantaloupe, honeydew, or watermelon)
  • 12–16 slices of halal prosciutto or turkey prosciutto (or a halal alternative such as chicken or beef prosciutto)
  • Fresh mint leaves (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic glaze or reduction (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional)
  • Freshly cracked black pepper (optional)
  • Wooden or metal skewers

Ingredient Highlights

  • Melon: Melon adds a refreshing, sweet flavor that pairs beautifully with the saltiness of prosciutto. Melons such as cantaloupe or honeydew are the most commonly used, but you can experiment with watermelon for a juicy twist.
  • Halal Prosciutto: Halal prosciutto or turkey prosciutto is used in place of traditional prosciutto to maintain the savory, salty flavor profile while adhering to halal dietary requirements.
  • Mint Leaves: Fresh mint leaves can enhance the refreshing quality of the skewers, adding a burst of aroma and a hint of herbal flavor that balances out the sweetness of the melon.
  • Balsamic Glaze: A drizzle of balsamic glaze adds a tangy, sweet finish to the dish, elevating the taste while making the dish more visually appealing.

Instructions

Prepare the Melon:

  1. Cut the Melon: Choose a ripe melon, preferably one that’s firm but not overripe. Slice the melon in half and remove the seeds from the center.
  2. Cube the Melon: Using a sharp knife, cut the melon into bite-sized cubes. If you prefer, you can use a melon baller to create perfectly round balls for a more elegant presentation.

Prepare the Prosciutto:

  1. Prepare the Prosciutto: If using halal prosciutto or turkey prosciutto, cut the slices into smaller, manageable pieces. Depending on the size of the melon cubes or balls, you may need to fold or roll the prosciutto around the melon.
  2. Wrap the Melon: Gently wrap each melon cube or ball with a slice of prosciutto, securing it with your hands. If needed, you can use toothpicks to keep the prosciutto in place. Alternatively, you can fold the prosciutto like an accordion to create a visually appealing texture.

Assemble the Skewers:

  1. Skewer the Ingredients: Slide the melon-prosciutto combination onto wooden or metal skewers. You can alternate between the melon and prosciutto or add a fresh mint leaf in between for extra flavor. Repeat the process until all the ingredients are assembled on the skewers.
  2. Optional Garnish: If desired, drizzle a little olive oil over the skewers for an extra touch of flavor. Add a few cracks of freshly ground black pepper to enhance the taste.

Serve the Melon Prosciutto Skewers:

  1. Chill or Serve Immediately: You can serve these skewers right away or refrigerate them for about 15 minutes for a chilled version. If using balsamic glaze, drizzle it over the skewers just before serving for a beautiful finishing touch.
