4 burger buns (choose your preferred type, ensure they are halal)
For the Elote-Style Topping:
1 cup fresh or frozen corn kernels (preferably roasted or grilled)
2 tablespoons mayonnaise (ensure halal-certified)
1 tablespoon sour cream (optional, can be substituted with yogurt for a lighter version)
2 tablespoons cotija cheese or feta cheese, crumbled
1 tablespoon lime juice
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)
A pinch of salt
A pinch of cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
Lime wedges, for serving
Ingredient Highlights
Halal Ground Beef: The foundation of the burger, ensuring that it is halal and free from any non-halal ingredients. Use good-quality beef for the best flavor and texture.
Corn: The key element that gives the burger its signature elote-inspired flavor. Charred or grilled corn provides a smoky, sweet touch.
Cotija Cheese: A salty, crumbly cheese often used in elote, adding an authentic flavor to the topping. You can also substitute it with feta if necessary.
Lime and Chili: These ingredients are crucial for balancing the richness of the mayo and adding a zesty, spicy kick to the topping.
Instructions
Prepare the Burger Patties:
Form the Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, finely diced onion, minced garlic, ground cumin, chili powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with your hands or a spoon to avoid overworking the meat. Divide the mixture into 4 even portions and form each into a patty, making a small indent in the center of each patty with your thumb (this helps them cook evenly).
Preheat the Grill or Pan: Preheat your grill or a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Lightly oil the grill grates or the pan to prevent sticking.
Cook the Patties: Cook the patties on the grill or in the skillet for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness (160°F internal temperature for medium-well). Add cheese slices on top of the patties in the last minute of cooking to melt.
Prepare the Elote-Style Topping:
Grill the Corn: If you’re using fresh corn, grill the corn on medium-high heat for about 5-6 minutes, turning occasionally until the kernels are charred. Alternatively, you can use frozen corn and sauté it in a hot skillet until it’s slightly charred, which will also give a smoky flavor.
Mix the Topping: In a mixing bowl, combine the grilled corn, mayonnaise, sour cream (if using), cotija cheese, lime juice, chili powder, cilantro, salt, and cayenne pepper (if using). Stir until everything is well combined. Adjust seasoning to taste, adding more lime juice, salt, or chili powder as needed.
Assemble the Elote Burger:
Toast the Buns: Lightly toast the burger buns on the grill or in the skillet for a minute or two until they are golden brown.
Assemble the Burger: Place a cooked burger patty on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Generously spoon the elote-style topping over the patty.
Serve: Top with the other half of the bun and serve immediately, garnished with extra cilantro and lime wedges on the side.
